NAWIC National Convention 2001 was held in Anchorage, Alaska , from September 26 th through the 29 th. Incoming President Bonnie Morgan, CIT , and Outgoing President Kate Ellis, CIT , represented the Colorado Springs chapter.

At the awards luncheon on Friday, the Colorado Springs chapter was awarded second place (and $200.00) for our entry in the Safety and Health Awareness Contest. Kate Ellis accepted the award on behalf of the chapter. Our chapter’s entry, entitled “Go Ask Alice , ” was submitted by Cathy O’Canna, CCA, of PPC Construction. Thanks to Cathy for her insight on the topic of dealing with migraines in the construction field. Some excerpts from the article:

Dealing with migraine while working in the construction field is particularly challenging, especially when your position requires field work – come rain or come shine.

Many co-workers and supervisors think of this group of victims as women who simply cannot handle the stress in our life or addicted to prescription drugs, or worse, just plain lazy, looking for an excuse to leave work early.

The construction industry and all industries concerned with health and safety issues of their employees need to be educated to this potentially life-threatening disease. The real key is to be open and honest about your condition.
