The CAD/Design/Drafting
Competition is a contest designed for senior high students. The
contest provides recognition to students for creative design, successful
problem solving, and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings.
Entries are evaluated for detail, accuracy and originality of work.
Objectives of the contest are to introduce the student to the construction
industry in a positive and
challenging manner, while fosteringa sense of self-worth and building confidence.
Mentoring programs between students and educators are also encouraged.

|
|
| Each chapter is furnished with a "Design Problem" that is
designed by a licensed Architect or Engineer and is generic enough to meet
the needs of all areas of the US and our international affiliates. Project
drawings must include, as a minimum, a floor plan, exterior elevation, and
site plan with the placement of the structure. Prizes are awarded to the
winners. |

CAD/Design/Drafting Competition 2009-2010: |
| |
Of the 52 students from four of our local schools who registered, forty six were completed; twenty two CAD Designs and twenty four hand drawings. Cheyenne Mountain, Doherty, and Rampart High Schools of Colorado Springs, Colorado students completed and turned in drawings or designs for the 2009-2010 library project competition. The design problem required that Universal Design be used in all aspects of the drawings/designs. In addition, the students were instructed that the building should be as energy efficient as possible, and were encouraged to use “green” building materials and alternate energy sources. Entries were evaluated for detail, accuracy, and originality of work.
The 2009-2010 Design Problem was a small satellite library in a residential neighborhood that would not only serve the local families, but would be a meeting place for community activities. The nine local judges from the industry had impressive criticisms and valuable insights about the creativity, details and logic of the Brookville Library displayed in the completed projects. The pride, passion and creativity put into the drawings were a recurring topic at the awards ceremony held April 10, 2010 at the Leon Young Center. Students and judges were eager to meet and discuss their ideas during the awards ceremony. The first place winners of the local competition in both divisions (CAD/Drafting) were eligible for the regional competition. Local winners are shown below:
|
Hand Drafting:
1st Place - Kevin Kohl $200
2nd Place - Kaitlyn Kravitz $100
3rd Place - Michael Dewar $50

The Design Problem for 2010-2011:
|
|
For the design problem this year the students are being asked to design a home for a family of five, the Walkers. They are moving into an older
neighborhood in the city. The neighborhood is becoming popular for families to move into
because of its accessibility to new commercial developments such as shopping and restaurants
as well as public transportation. Your creativity and expertise will give you an opportunity to
design additional houses in the area. For a more complete description of the competition rules and current design problem, go to www.nawiceducation.org > K-12 programs > CAD Design. |

Competition History:
|
|
Colorado Springs Chapter 356 held its first
CAD/Design/Drafting Competition in the spring of 1998, only one year after
it was chartered. Over the past years, the competition has grown to
include seven area high schools and over thirty entries submitted for
judging. An annual awards ceremony is held each year in April to
display the entries, announce the winners, and award cash prizes.
In
1999, Jason Heard, from Rampart High School, went on to win both the
regional and national competitions. He is currently studying architecture
in Wyoming. In 2002, both of our first place winners, Jessica Hehr
of Coronado High School, and Cristina Rustenbach, from Rampart High
School, went on to win first place in the Regional Competition and took
fourth place in their respective divisions at the national level. Both of these young women also plan to study architecture.
